"Test your print skills to the web and beyond."
For me, this was also a test of my editing skills.
I did a lot of reformatting and rewriting from week 7.

Business card, from Rydberg Chapter 10
I did an extra one.
Trifold Brochure, from Rydberg Chapter 10 worksheet, download and instructions
Interactive PDF of the above brochure
Please note that as of today Weebly does not upload Interactive PDF files. So I put it in Acrobat Acrobat Pro, then saved it as a PNG image so it could be seen here. I'm sure there are other work-arounds also. But yes I tested it and the arrow keys and links work in the original Interactive PDF.
Newspaper ad
This was not a requirement, but it was pretty fun. I made several changes from the example that are improvements in my opinion. According to the book and information the actual size of this imaginary ad would have been a 3/4 page size, black and white.

Hooks & Ladders - from Rydberg Chapter 7
This assignment taught me a few things. My favorite part was creating the red Volunteer patch from scratch.
ID Magazine - from Rydberg Chapter 8
The student handout for this assignment was almost like having training wheels. But that's okay with me. I learned some great things about paragraph styles and formatting this week.
Independent Project:
Protest something you think is wrong using a combination of words and images
I thought way too long and tried too many things before arriving at this. I wanted the image to be something I came up with. That's my artwork, and as far as I know this particular thought, "Apathy is Surrender." is my own. Initially I had several thoughts about a lot of causes and problems in the world, everything from saving the elephants to preserving water quality, to keeping independence in the media. Ultimately the more I thought about it though, the more I concluded that it is apathy, more than any single issue, that does the most damage in the world. As I did a little digging it didn't take long to be reminded that both Plato and Einstein had the same thought so I'm in good company. I guess it's obvious that apathy is a huge challenge facing this, the "meh" generation.

Adobe CS6 InDesign Calendar
The photos are from our recent family trip to Disneyland and California Adventure. We had a wonderful time. Technically October has nothing to do with these photos, they were taken in early September but this is a good time to remember the sunshine to keep us warm.
Muskie Guide - Text and images from Adobe InDesign CS6, Terry Rydberg
The finished product looks fairly simple but getting it to this point required a lot of fussing. I wanted to be complete with conveying all the information without losing any of the graphic excitement. I feel like I pretty much got what I was going for in the end, without sacrificing any of the somewhat lengthy copy. This was a good assignment as it was and although I had the option to use my own theme and text, I felt it would be better on this one to work this assignment from the text and the associated download files. I have no idea if that is a real guide service or not.
Independent Project: Billboard
This independent project was simply to create a billboard with my life story being the main message. What a gutsy assignment. I'm actually a lot more shy than this, but it makes it look like I'm running for office. I have no idea whether I heard the quote somewhere, dreamed it, read it in a horoscope or what - so I'm not claiming to have written it. At the time I started this assignment I took a breath, mentally took a step back and had an "aha" moment that really my life has been about overcoming fears about this, that or the other thing. I grew up terrified of what could happen during the cold war, and being afraid of failing in one way or another, and so on.
Love is the antidote to fear. I am much stronger and braver today, blessed with my wife of 20 years and my young daughter. I'm still chicken about so many things but I don't let it paralyze me. As an unaccompanied cello soloist I can't even think about having stage fright - so I don't. I think instead about what I can bring to the people I am playing for, how I can "plus" their experience. As a salesman, I certainly can not just live in my comfort zone either.
A billboard has to be seven words or less to be effective when people are driving by. The irony is that I would be terrified to actually see this as a billboard with my name on it. The original billboard photo is from Wikimedia Commons, of a billboard in Edmonton and I chose it because I really like the rounded corners. I modified the image using Photoshop and InDesign.

Word Collage from Week Three Tutorial
Okay so here are some more vacation photos. I'm going to need to really go to the well and get lots more photos for class at this rate, I'm going through them like crazy! I managed to sneak a lot of relatives into this one. I would like to thank my wife, my daughter, my mom, my dad, my sisters-in-law, my brother in law, my aunt-in-law, and my nieces for putting up with me pointing a camera at them all the time. Oh, and a couple of random people who ended up in a shot or two.

Independent Project 2: Collage "Shoe 2"
I learned a few tricks the second time around. The collage (scroll further down to see it) was my earlier attempt at an InDesign collage technique. It really was worth the effort of doing a second one. The photo is of my daughter's shoe from when she was at cheerleading camp. I used about 1/100th of the space of the original image of a large photo shot RAW that I reworked in Photoshop. I liked the detail and the reflection. I didn't pixellate the image. The mosaic layer images for the collage came from Microsoft Image Library (public domain) and I took them down to 41% transparency in InDesign.
